It was built by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir in honor of his wife Nur Jahan in 1619. It was and still is best specimen of Mughal horticulture and covers 12.4 hectares.

The layout of the garden is after the Persian style. It is built of a flat square land from the center of which there is a source of water or a stream or a canal. There are many channels of water here adorning the garden and the main water channel is called the Shah Nahar.
